More info: Lapis was formerly known as “Sapphirus” from the Greek meaning “blue stone” until the middle ages when in became known as Lapis Lazuli. “Lapis” is latin for “stone,” and “Lazuli” comes from the Persian “lāzaward” referring to the sky and Lapis’ likeness to the heavens above, and even its likeness to the Earth itself. Lapis contains blue Lazurite crystals mixed with Pyrite and white Calcite, it can also contain Sodalite. Lapis was used heavily in Ancient Egypt, Sumeria, and Mesopotamia. It is not a mineral however, it is a rock composed of various minerals including aluminum, calcium, sulfur, silicon, sodium, augite, diopside, enstatite, mica, hauynite, hornblende and nosean. The coloring agent is sulfur. The tomb of King Tutankhamen was heavily adorned with Lapis Lazuli, as were other the sarcophaguses of other Egyptian pharaohs. Cleopatra used powdered Lapis for eye shadow. In Russia, the imperial family used Lapis Lazuli on a grand scale for the columns of St. Issac's Cathedral, and the wall paneling for the Pushkin Palace in St. Petersburg. The finest Lapis specimens come from the Hindu Kush mountain area of Afghanistan. Other deposits exist in Russia, Chile, India, Colorado, and California.
