The name Amethyst comes from the ancient Greek “a” meaning not and “methustos” meaning intoxicated. Amethyst is the traditional birthstone for February and it is the official state gemstone of South Carolina. Amethyst color can fade if exposed to too much sunlight. Up until the 18th century, Amethyst was included in the most valuable gemstone group known as "Precious Gemstones," along with Diamond, Sapphire, Ruby, and Emerald.
