More info: The name Hematite is derived from the Greek word “haima” meaning blood. Hematite is mined as one of the main ores for iron, which means metallic iron can be extracted from Hematite. Occasionally you will find small amounts of red within the stone. This is where the iron has oxidized causing rust, and why Hematite was called "bloodstone" in the past. Hematite deposits are found in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Cuba, England, Germany, India, Mexico, Spain and Russia. In the United States, Hematite mining is most common in Alabama, Arizona, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Tennessee, Wyoming and Utah. It is the state mineral of Alaska and was used heavily as jewelry in Victorian-age Europe. Hematite has also been found on Mars using an infrared spectrometer to locate the mineral. When formed into thin plates, Hematite is red and transparent. Hematite is shiny and metallic when polished.
